After seeing the Dead or Alive moive poster I've really reliezed that a lot of moive companies are buying out the rights to Video game franchises. Probably this has to be because people aren't watching crappy the sequels
they make and they've run out of books and TV shows to use.
While I don't deny that some of these might turn out to be good moives but others...

Anyways do you think these moives will suck and fall flat on their face at the box office?

Personally I think we'll see 1 or 2 hits and all of the others will be like if a friend invited you to his house and he wouldn't let you play a video game.

I have never seen a movie based on a video game that was good.

Mario sucked
Doom sucked
Silent Hill sucked

the trend of sucky ness? XD i liked Silent Hill for its creepyness but i agree on disliking Resident Evil didn't really follow the storylines at all..almost killed every scenario on the game..but yea i think if they're going to make a movie from a game it should actually follow the games story line, who else is wiz me on that?! >

Well there plenty more on the way - Blood Rayne 2 movie, Halo the movie, Prince of Persia movie and Tekken the movie to name but a few of the ones in production.

I dont think some of them are too bad, what people Hate most is the deviation from the games, people dont like change, for a non game players the movies are Average to good, for a non gameplayer they generally rate from Amazing to Poor (depending on the person, but generally most say Poor)

See the problem with translating one form of media to another like books/comics/games to movies is that you LOSE something important with the transition.

Books - Books allow the reader to have more detail. Turning books into movies cuts out a LOT of detail.
Comics - The beauty of the imagery and direction of panel layout (theres an art to how you layout panels). Turning comics into movies stretches their storylines, which are designed to be episodic.
Video Games - Video Games are all about interaction and putting the player in control in an immersive environment. Turning games into movies attempts to reconcile story elements that require player interaction into a passive format.

Hafta agree, it's the deviation from the original source that is annoying. If you ignore that for one second they generally aren't too bad. So ppl that don't know about or aren't familiar with the original source tend to enjoy them a little more. I find that I can, for the most part, get some entertainment out of those movies if I don't think about where it came from while I'm watching it

Lets not forget about Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, had basically nothing to do with final fantasy whatsoever....

Advent Children was good though.

roflsocks, how things have changed.

It used to be games-of-movies, but now it's movies-of-games too. I think it started out well with the conversion of Street Fighter II to film (lmao it was bad, thank God for the anime) and then when it got to Tomb Raider... well actually I thought the Tomb Raider films were spot on, if a bit too "James Bond" with all the gadgets.

Tomb Raider has always been themed closely to India Jones - a mostly real world with a bit of the supernatural thrown in. Tomb Raider games and films are very close - weird plot, lots of eye candy and plenty of action! Certainly not intellectual but very entertaining all the same

There's a ton of crossovers come to think of it. Just think of what's going on between comics, books, games and films at the moment... cross pollination all over the shop. (TopCow's tomb raider comics are hawt btw

I think games are an untapped resource for movie makers... its not impossible to make a movie that has a specialized fanbase... we have great movies from just about all the marvel characters, toy lines like transformers (awesome), g i joe (on the way) and such...

I personally think some popular games would make great flicks if the right producers get a hold of them:

Zelda
Metroid
Metal gear
etc...

Unfortunately we don't have a very good track record with game movies

Mortal Kombat was actually pretty good, and the sequel was so bad it was hilarious. I sometimes watch it with some friends and we laugh all the way through. "The earth was created in seven days.. So to.. WILL IT BE DESTROYED!"

The main problem most of the movies have, is that they don't stick close enough to the games story. If they're going to make a movie based on a game they should actually have it related to to the game, not loosely based on it.

Halo was looking very promising, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it'll ever get anywhere.
